Vinton Cerf and Robert Kahn

Introducing two Internet pioneers - Vinton Cerf and Robert Kahn.

Cerf is the co-designer of the TCP/IP protocols and the architecture of the Internet.
  • Widely known as one of the "Fathers of the Internet".

Kahn is also the co-designer of the TCP/IP protocols.

He set four goals for the design of what would become the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP):

  • Network connectivity. Any network could connect to another network through a gateway.
  • Distribution. There would be no central network administration or control.
  • Error recovery. Lost packets would be retransmitted.
  • Black box design. No internal changes would have to be made to a network to connect it to other networks.

1974 - First Use of term Internet by Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn in paper on Transmission Control Protocol.

Fitness & PDA

An interesting article published on Thursday (The Star In.Tech page 2) highlighted the use of PDA in a Fitness Centre (Fitness First).

The instructors will log the data into the gym's information system to keep track of an individual member's progress. They can also track exercise perfromances with the PDAs.

If Fitness First members visit an out-of-town centre, they can also update their records and from there, their progress can be monitored online. Personalised training data and programmes can be develoed and designed for individual member.

Study: Shoppers naive about retail prices online

Some of the finding from this survey:

Most American consumers don't realize Internet merchants and even traditional retailers sometimes charge different prices to different customers for the same products, according to a new survey.

First-time buyers at a retailer could see higher prices than a firm's repeat customers, and retailers may not offer discounts to consumers who buy the same brands regularly without even looking at alternative products on the same site.

The Internet empowers careful shoppers to conveniently compare prices and features across thousands of stores. But it also enables businesses to quietly collect detailed records about a customer's behavior and preferences and set prices accordingly. Changing prices is generally lawful unless doing so discriminates against a consumer's race or gender or violates antitrust or price-fixing laws.

ICANN gives greenlight to XXX domain

Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), has approved the use of new web addresses beginning with an ".xxx" suffix. Read this.

The fee, however, will be ten times more expensive than the dot-com. company. This will help to protect kids as well as enabling the filtering software used by families to be more effective to block the access to those sites.

Other new suffixs include ".jobs" and ".travel".
